Discrimination and unfair treatment are not individual problems but common issues
Even though discrimination and unfair treatment are prohibited by law, they are still to be found in Denmark today. Irrespective of whether it is intentional or unintentional, the pain and the consequences for the individual are still the same. It also has serious social consequences, as discrimination creates divisiveness and insecurity.
The individual’s wish to be able to use his or her skills and become self-sufficient must never be challenged or limited by barriers, prejudices and discrimination. All people have the right to equal opportunities with regard to jobs and education and are entitled to decent wages and working conditions.
One of the most important tasks for union representatives in the trade union movement is to advise and support members who come to them with a problem. This also apples in cases where members experience discrimination and unfair treatment. Discrimination is a very sensitive issue for both the person discriminated against and the perpetrator. It is often a very big step for a member to report it and make a case for discrimination. It is therefore important that union representatives are aware of the issues, both on a daily basis in the workplace and in connection with the administration of reports from members.
This leaflet gives examples of discrimination, information on case studies and prevention initiatives for use in the workplace and in the unions. Its main focus is discrimination based on race, skin colour, ethnicity, nationality, religion and faith.
